Terms of use

Last updated 4 October 2026

These terms cover the services we run for Crocodile: this website, the server directory at crocodilechat.com and the coordination server at coord.crocodilechat.com (together, "the service"). By using the service you agree to them. The privacy notice explains what data the service handles.

The software

The Crocodile app and servers are open source. Their licences, mainly the GNU AGPL-3.0, govern what you may do with the code, and nothing here limits them. The name and logo are trademarks; see the trademark policy.

Beta

Crocodile is in public beta. Features may change, the service may be interrupted, and data held on the servers may be lost. The service is provided free of charge and "as is", without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows. In particular, Crocodile has not yet had an independent security audit: don't rely on it where your safety depends on it. We are not liable for damages arising from your use of the service, except where the law does not allow liability to be excluded.

Your account

Your account is a key stored on your devices; there is no password we could reset. Keep your recovery key somewhere safe: without it and without a signed-in device, nobody can get the account back, including us. You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Profile → Delete account. You must be at least 16 years old, or the minimum age for online services in your country if that is higher.

Acceptable use

We can't see what you say, and we don't want to. You are responsible for it. Don't use the service to:

We may limit or refuse service to accounts, devices or network addresses that abuse the servers, and we cooperate with valid legal requests to the extent of the little data we hold.

Other servers

Anyone can run a coordination server, and the app may connect you through one. Servers run by other people are not ours and follow their operators' own terms.

Changes and ending

We may change these terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and big changes will be announced in the app's release notes. We may change or stop the service, and you may stop using it at any time.

Contact

Questions about these terms: contact@crocodilechat.com. Security problems: report them privately.
